Wood Chipping in Glasgow

  • Chipping is handled on site as part of the tree work, not booked as a separate call-out
  • NPTC/Lantra-certificated wood chipper operators, fully insured throughout
  • Chippings left for your own garden free of charge, or cleared away completely, your choice

Branches and brash from a tree job pile up faster than most people expect, and once they're cut, whole limbs take up a surprising amount of space for how little they actually weigh - which is exactly the problem wood chipping solves. Rather than booking a skip or making repeat trips to the tip, we run the chipper on site as part of the tree work itself, so branches go in one end and come out the other as chippings before we've even finished the job.

One thing worth knowing before you call: we chip material from trees we're actively working on for a client, we don't take in loads of already-felled timber left over from someone else's job, and we're not a bagged wood chip supplier who delivers product to order. If you've a pile of brash from your own pruning or a previous contractor's visit, tell us the volume and species when you call and we'll give you a straight answer on whether it's something we can fold into a visit.

What our wood chipping visits actually cover

  • Chipping of branches, brash and small-diameter limbs generated during the same tree removal, crown reduction, pruning or hedge cutting visit
  • Feeding material through a petrol or PTO-driven chipper suited to branch wood, typically up to somewhere around 15-20cm diameter depending on the machine in use that day
  • Chipping hedge trimmings and other thin offcuts alongside larger branch wood in the same pass
  • Chippings left in a spot on your property you choose, ready to barrow off as mulch or path material, at no extra charge
  • Loading chippings into our vehicle and taking them away instead, if you'd rather not keep them
  • A walk-round at the end to clear loose brash, twigs and sawdust from paths, lawns and driveways

Not Included / Costed Separately

  • We don't chip timber from trees already felled by someone else and left lying around - this is an add-on to tree work we're carrying out, not a standalone waste-processing service
  • We're not a bagged wood chip or bark mulch supplier - if you want chippings delivered without a tree job attached, that's not something we offer
  • Large trunk sections and thick rounds go for log or firewood disposal rather than through the chipper, since a chipper isn't built for timber of that girth and forcing it through damages the machine
  • Chipping large volumes purely for a landscaping or path-building project unconnected to tree work would need a separate conversation, if we can take it on at all
  • Delivering chippings to a third location such as another property or an allotment isn't a standard part of the visit - ask when you book, since it depends on the round we're doing that day

From brash pile to bagged chippings

  1. Two starting points -- Most chipping calls begin one of two ways: it's the tail end of a tree removal, reduction, pruning or hedge cutting job we're already doing, or it's a pile of brash already sitting in a garden from work done earlier. Tell us which one it is when you call, along with species and a rough sense of volume, and we'll know straightaway whether it's a quick add-on to a visit or something that needs a proper look first.
  2. Sizing up the material in person -- Volume of brash looks very different described over the phone than it does stacked in a garden, and branch diameter matters more than most people expect, since a chipper rated for thin wood chokes fast on thick limbs - so for anything beyond a small tidy-up, someone comes out to see the pile or the tree before we commit to a price.
  3. Chipping as the cutting happens, or as its own pass -- Where chipping follows on from cutting, we run the chipper as branches come down rather than letting cut material stack up, which keeps the site tidier and safer as the job goes on. Where it's a standalone pile, we work through it in one continuous pass rather than stopping and starting.
  4. Stacking, clearing and a final check -- Chippings get blown or raked into a pile in a spot you choose, or loaded straight into our vehicle if you'd rather it was gone. Before we leave, we walk the area for stray offcuts, twigs and sawdust, check paths and lawns are clear, and confirm you're happy with where anything's been left.

What actually drives the price of a chipping job

What sets the price of a chipping job is less the visit itself and more what's actually going through the machine: volume of brash and branch diameter matter far more than time on site, since a hedge's worth of thin trimmings clears in minutes while the same weight in thick sycamore limbs can take the better part of an hour. Most of the time in Glasgow gardens, chipping isn't priced on its own at all - it's rolled into whatever tree removal, reduction or hedge cutting it follows, since running the chipper for twenty minutes at the end of a visit adds relatively little to the overall bill. Where it is priced separately, UK figures for a typical residential clear-up sit somewhere around £100 to £500 depending on those two factors, while larger commercial-scale chipping - site clearance or land management work - tends to be charged more like a day rate, upwards of roughly £1,200 plus VAT for a full day with an operator and machine. None of this replaces an actual figure for your garden - get in touch with rough details of what's involved, and for anything more than a small tidy-up we'll want to see the site before quoting, since a photo rarely shows how compacted or tangled a brash pile really is.

How different branch wood behaves through the chipper

Material through the chipper Typical diameter it copes with How it feeds Where it ends up
Hedge trimmings and thin brash Up to around 3-5cm Feeds fast, barely slows the machine down Straight through to chippings, ready for mulch
Broadleaf branch wood (birch, willow, ornamental prunings) Roughly 8-15cm Feeds steadily; forked branches sometimes need trimming first Chippings as usual, slightly coarser texture
Resinous conifer (leylandii, pine, spruce trimmings) Similar diameter to broadleaf, handled differently Needle and resin build-up clogs the chute faster, so we clear it more often mid-job Still usable as chippings, though stickier until they dry
Thick limbs and mature hardwood (sycamore, beech, oak) Upper end of most machines' range, often 15-20cm Fed slowly, sometimes split first, to avoid stalling or damaging the machine Some goes through as chippings; the thickest sections are set aside as logs instead
Trunk sections and rounds Beyond chipper capacity Not fed through the chipper at all Cut and left as logs or firewood, or removed separately

Why we chip it where it falls

We've fed everything from resinous conifer trimmings, which clog a chipper's chute faster than most people expect, through to thick sycamore limbs that need the machine slowed right down rather than forced through - knowing the difference between the two, and when to stop and clear the chute rather than push on, is part of the job rather than something picked up from a manual. The person feeding branches through the chipper is the same person who was up the tree or running the saw beforehand, and our team is NPTC/Lantra-certificated specifically on wood chipper operation, not just general chainsaw work, because a badly fed or badly guarded chipper is genuinely one of the more dangerous machines on a domestic site. All work is carried out to British Standard BS3998 and we're fully insured, which counts for more than it sounds when a chipper's running near a greenhouse, a parked car or a neighbour's fence, since these machines can throw debris a surprising distance if they're not positioned and guarded properly. Quotes are free and come with no obligation, so there's no cost in finding out whether chipping is the right way to deal with your particular pile of branches.

Getting the chipper to your garden

Glasgow is where most of our wood chipping work happens, from tenement back courts in the Southside, where getting a chipper through a narrow close takes more planning than a driveway job, to the bigger gardens around Bearsden and Newton Mearns, where a mature beech or sycamore can leave a genuinely large pile of brash behind. We also work through Renfrewshire and Clydebank, and down towards Paisley, Dumbarton and the Clyde estuary, as well as into Lanarkshire as far as East Kilbride and Rutherglen. Closer to the Campsie Fells, storm-blown branch wood after a winter gale is a common reason for a chipping call-out, and our reach extends up to Stirling and along to Bo'ness at the edge of our patch. Give us your postcode when you call and we'll confirm straightaway whether it's on our round.

Wood chipping questions we get asked

What size branches can your chipper handle?

It depends on the machine we bring for that job, but as a rough guide, most domestic-scale chippers handle branch wood up to somewhere around 15-20cm in diameter comfortably. Anything thicker - main stems, large limbs, trunk sections - typically goes for log or firewood disposal instead, since forcing oversized timber through a chipper is how machines get damaged and how accidents happen.

Do you offer a wood chipping service for garden waste in Glasgow?

Yes, but as an extension of tree work rather than a stand-alone bulk garden waste service - we chip the branches and brash a removal, reduction, pruning or hedge cutting job leaves behind, on site, as we go. If you've a lot of general garden waste alongside a chipping job, mention it when you call and we'll tell you honestly what we can take.

How much does it cost to have branches and brash chipped on site?

When it's part of a tree job, chipping is usually included in the overall price rather than charged as a separate line. As a standalone figure, typical UK residential chipping jobs run from around £100 to £500 depending on volume and branch thickness, but the only way to get a number that means anything for your garden is a look at the pile or the tree, since photos rarely show how much material is actually there.

Can I keep the wood chippings for my own garden after the job?

Yes - if you want them, we'll leave them in a spot you choose, ready to use as mulch around borders or on paths. If you don't want them, we'll load them into our vehicle and take them away instead. Just let us know your preference before we start.

Do you chip waste on site or take it away to process elsewhere?

On site, as standard. The chipper comes with us and runs at your property, so branches never need to be moved anywhere before they're processed - usually faster and less disruptive than loading whole branches for transport elsewhere.

Is wood chipping cheaper than skip hire for garden waste?

Often, yes, for branch wood specifically. Whole branches take up a lot of a skip's volume relative to their weight, and you'd still need to cut them down to fit, whereas a chipper reduces the same material to a fraction of the space in minutes. Skip hire tends to make more sense when you've got mixed waste - branches plus other material - rather than branch wood on its own.

How noisy is a wood chipper and are there time restrictions for use?

It's a loud piece of kit while it's actually running, closer to a road drill than a lawnmower, though most jobs only need it in short bursts rather than continuously. There's no fixed legal cut-off time for using one in a residential area in Scotland, but we stick to reasonable daytime hours out of consideration for neighbours, and we're happy to work around a specific time window if you ask.

Can you chip a large pile of branches left over from a hedge trimming job?

Yes, hedge trimmings chip easily since the wood is generally thin - often quicker than branch wood from tree pruning. If the pile is from a job we didn't do ourselves, get in touch with a rough idea of the volume and we'll say honestly whether it's something we can fit in.

Can fresh chippings go straight onto beds as mulch, or do they need to compost first?

Fresh wood chippings are fine as a surface mulch straight away - spread on top of soil rather than dug in, they don't cause the nitrogen drawdown problem people sometimes worry about, because that issue comes from mixing raw wood into the soil itself, not laying it on top. If you're planning to dig chippings in as a soil improver rather than use them as a surface layer, letting them break down for several months first is the safer approach.

Get the branches dealt with before the pile grows

A stack of brash left in a corner gets heavier, wetter and more awkward to move every week it sits there. If you've tree work planned or a pile of branches from a recent job, get in touch for a free, no-obligation quote and we'll tell you straight whether chipping on site is the right way to deal with what you've got.
